eBook Reader Market Will Compete on e-Content and Service - 10 June 2010
Revenues from global eBook reader shipments were estimated at USD1.3 billion in 2009 and are forecast to reach around USD 6.0 billion in 2015, according to a new report, entitled “The World Market for eBook Readers – 2010 Edition” from IMS Research. Although the eBook reader market is forecast to grow rapidly, competition is hotting up as more and more companies enter this market.
The new entrants comprise mainly three types of company.
First, leading consumer electronics brands such as Acer and Samaung. These companies have a strong brand image and well developed marketing and sales channels.
Second, leading publishers such as Barnes & Noble. These companies own lots of e-content and are able to offer the newest content to readers.
Third, leading telecom operators such as China Mobile. These companies own telecom networks and are able to offer bundled packages to allow quick and easy delivery of e-content at lower prices.
Research director, Richard Jun Li commented: “future competition in the eBook reader market will not focus only on the hardware, but will involve three aspects: the availability of e-content, the price of this content, and the delivery mechanism. Companies which can successfully integrate the resources for these three key aspects will be able to provide excellent e-content and services to users, giving them competitive edge in the eBook reader market in the future.”
