The Impact of Recession on The SIM Card Market 23 June 2010
The impact of the global economic downturn has been far reaching, and the mobile handset market has not escaped the recession unscathed. Nevertheless, despite the financial pressures caused by the recession, the global Cellular Installed Base, comprised of all active devices on cellular networks, grew 14.1% year over year (YoY) in 2009. In particular, the installed base for 3G networks showed considerable increase, growing 32.9% YoY. This growth, in spite of economic turmoil, highlights the strength of the industry overall, as well as the bright future for the evolution of cellular technology.

SIM Card Market Defies the Downturn 27 May 2009
The latest data from IMS Research shows that the SIM card market continues to defy the economic downturn that is currently hitting the mobile market. Total shipments of SIM cards in 2008 grew to reach the record number of 3.07 billion. This is in marked contrast to the numbers from manufacturers which showed handset shipments declining sharply in the second half of the year.

Due to market saturation, increasing competition and tough economic conditions, communications companies (telcos, ISP and cellphone operators) are seeking to increase their ARPUs. Remote video monitoring and surveillance (RVMaS) could be the answer. The term RVMaS refers to network camera based solutions that allow the end user to remotely view live or recently recorded video in security and non security related applications. A new report from IMS Research shows that annual worldwide revenues from the residential RVMaS market were around $158 million in 2008. IMS Research conservatively predicts that this market will be over three times as large by 2013.
